CSM George Gates was the long-serving Company Sergeant Major of HQ Company. Duggie Wakefield was in Orderly Room (‘OR’) of HQ Company, both were with the Battalion from the start--Wakefield as a July 1940 recruit. The ‘QM’ was the 16th DLI’s Captain Quartermaster, ‘Bert’ Newman. Larry Gaines was the CQMS (Colour Sgt) of C Company in 1942 and subsequently the Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant (RQMS). The RSM was Regimental Sgt Major E Thomasson ‘Lew’ was another ex-Beds and Herts NCO and mutual friend, Sgt John Lewindon MM.
