Algiers Postcard January 1943
Algiers Postcard Pte T Tunney

Notes

The Battalion landed at Algiers on January 3rd 1943 and moved to a transit camp at Eucalyptus, near Maison Caree. Visits back into the Algerian capital were allowed--though what some men actually got up to in and around the infamous Casbah is best left to the imagination! On January 13th, the Battalion entrained for Ghardimaou, the unit’s vehicles travelling separately by road.. On January 17th, the Battalion relieved the 5th Buffs in the Green Hill Section of the Tunisian front line.

Lt C W Duck (KIA 1/3/43) was my father’s C Company platoon officer. His signature on the card denotes that it has been vetted for security content by him. Officers had the job of reading and, if necessary, censoring their men’s mail. This kind of detail on any surviving correspondence can be a priceless clue to fixing a soldier’s specific company.
