More Newspaper Photographs of Sedjenane DLI Casualties

Many Sedjenane casualties over the period February 27th to March 2nd 1943 were initially posted as ‘Missing’ and were not confirmed as being Killed in Action until well over a year later. The newspaper items at left and right, for Pte J Bennell and Sgt T Swan did not appear until June 1944. The heartache of their families and friends over this period can hardly be imagined. Also note, at right below, the appeal for information which appeared in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle in December 1943. All items on this page courtesy of The Middlesborough Evening Gazette, The Newcastle Evening Chronicle, The Shields Gazette and The Sunderland Echo.

Pte G Moat died of his wounds in Italian hands on March 5th 1943, presumably after being evacuated by air for urgent medical treatment. Most DLI Sedjenane POWs were still in Tunisia at this date. See also the item below right. The In Memoriam notice below for Pte S Neal appeared in April 1944, over a year after his posting as Missing in Action.
