PTE HARVEY HURST AND FRIENDS, 16 DLI, GREECE, EARLY 1945

Private Harvey Hurst of Oldham is pictured here at back right in Greece in early 1945 with several unidentified friends. Originally enlisted in the Manchester Regiment, by 1942 Hurst was in C Company, 16 DLI and signed my father’s

Soldier’s Will as a witness.

My father’s December 1942 letter from the troopship Staffordshire,

notes that he went back to Brancepeth just before the Battalion sailed away to war in December 1942.

The names Bill and Bob Kelsby have been mentioned as pals of Hurst in 1945. Hurst also features on the

1944 C Company photograph

and was with the Battalion through to disbandment. It’s probable that the men featured with him here are also C Company.

Note the photo above has not been reverse printed: it’s the flag that’s being held the wrong way round! Photograph courtesy Mrs Hurst via Roy Mills.
