Percy Wilson, 16 DLI, AB 64 Paybook, Courses Taken |
All British Army soldiers in 1939-45 were required to be proficient on both the Lee Enfield rifle and the Bren light machine gun (LMG), The entries in Pte Wilson’s paybook above, record the dates at which he passed his Test of Elementary Training (‘TOET’) on both weapons on 24/4/41, this would be at the end of his period of basic training. |

The ‘War Course’ dated 4/8/42 could well be at the 46th Division Battle School, which was attended by many 16 DLI men at this time. ‘Attended MT Driving Course at 4 ITC. Passed’ denotes that he was at Brancepeth on a Motor Transport Driving Course between 4/9/41 and 8/11/41. As Percy was posted to the 16th Battalion from Brancepeth on 11/4/42, it seems he must have stayed on at the County Durham camp through until then. This is confirmed by his record of leaves on the following page. |
