A E C Vizard was commissioned into the Middlesex Regiment in 1941. Even though he had been serving with the DLI since late 1941, he was still recorded as a Middlesex Regiment officer by the War Office. This was true of many 16th DLI officers who were also still recorded under their former units. Indeed, perhaps the majority in 1943-45 had been commissioned in other regiments and it’s also quite possible that a majority were also from parts other than Durham and Northumberland! In terms of rank, the WW2 British Army had a bad habit of awarding responsibility without the associated pay and offical status. At the time of his wounding, Vizard was an Acting or Temporary Major, but officially still a Captain.
