During the evening Colonel Preston read out many telegrams which had been received from past-members of the Battalion who were unable to be present, and from friends of the Battalion. Mention must be made of the messages of greetings and good wishes received from Major-General C F Weir, CB CBE DSO, the Divisional Commander of 46 Division during the Gothic Line, Greece and Austria days, and from the very popular Brigade Commander, Brigadier ‘Chippie’ Block CB CBE DSO, who had commanded 139 Brigade from Salerno to Athens. Lt Col J G Morrogh Bernard, MBE, the first commander of the 16th Battalion, also sent greetings. A special cheer went up when Colonel Preston told the gathering that Miss Norah Raschen, YMCA, of ‘char and wad’ fame, had sent her greetings to all ranks.

In a short speech, Colonel Preston thanked Colonel Harry Lowe for his assistance in procuring the use of the Three Tuns Hotel for the reunion, and it would be unfair to let the occasion pass without expressing our thanks to Colonel Preston himself for all the work he put in in organising this first reunion.

The next reunion of the old comrades of the 16th is to take place on the Saturday before Whitsun, 1948, and we are sure that many more, on hearing of the great doings at this first reunion, will be booking their tickets very early for the second reunion.

Finally, we send our best wishes to all past members of the 16th—we thought of you, and hope to see many more of you next time.
