Norman Bland is on the extreme right of this group of five soldiers. I’m guessing that the photo was taken in North Africa, sometime in 1943, possibly during his service with the 16th DLI prior to his being wounded in April 1943 or possibly at the end of his hospitalisation period later in the year, perhaps at an Infantry Reinforcement and Training Depot (IRTD). Many other 16th DLI soldiers were wounded in the Tunisian Campaign, so it’s very possible the other men featured are 16th DLI, too. Photograph courtesy Peter Bland.
