Sgt John Wintershausen MM is kneeling at the front, second from the left in this group of 16 DLI Support Company NCOs with the Nazi flag which he secured from the former Gestapo HQ in Athens. This photo has also appeared on page 201 of the 1999 book about 16 DLI, Heat of Battle by Peter Hart, where it is dated as February 1945. Compare with this photo of some C Company men with the same flag. The flag itself was retained by John Wintershausen and returned home with him in 1946. The photo below of the very same flag was taken by his son Paul in 2009--and it still looks almost brand new!
