The names and numbers listed opposite are as follows:
‘7782068 Pte G Barker Durham Light Infantry, C/O HQ 54 Area, CMF.’
His Army Number indicated that Barker originally served with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps prior to his time in the 16th DLI. Barker was wounded on 18/3/43, but presumably returned to the Battalion.

‘5254877 C Thomas, Royal Infirmary, Manchester.’
Obviously a 16 DLI friend who was wounded and repatriated back to the UK. His ‘525’ Army Number indicated previous service with the Gloucester Regiment. Pte C Thomas was reported wounded, serving with the 16th DLI in Italy, on 16/11/44.
‘5260369, L Holt, 16 DLI attached B Company, 11 General Depot, CMF.’
As with C Thomas, Holt’s Army Number indicates previous service with the Gloucester Regiment. L Holt was reported wounded, in Sicily, serving with the 6th Bn DLI, date not reported, circa 7/43, so obviously he came to the 16th as a replacement. He was reported wounded, Italy, serving with 16 DLI on 20/9/44.

It could well be that these men are some of the many unidentified friends of J A Philipson, whose portraits feature on the following pages.
