The Signal Platoon, 16 DLI, in Late 1940
Signal Platoon 1940

The original of this photograph is blurred and of very poor quality. However, it is still of great interest. Jimmy James supplied both the picture and the following caption:

Sitting and kneeling, first from left is Pte Byrant. Sgt W Jimmy’ James is behind the flags and to the left of him is L/Cpl Reynolds. At the right far end is Pte Copeland ('He was writing a book.'). Fourth from the right sitting on the ground is 'Yorkie.' 'He used to make us smile. He'd read his mail and say: "Eeeh, bugger me snow four foot deep in t'road!"'

Standing eighth from the left is Pte Thompson (later the Signals Platoon Sergeant. At the right far end is Pte Phillips. Second from the right is Pte Craggs. Eighth from the right is Braithwaite (in charge of the stores and signals equipment. Next to him to the left is Pte Secker (KIA in the Battle of Sedjenane in March 1943, see this page).

Reynolds and Thompson both served with the Battalion through to disbandment and feature in several of the other Signal Platoon photos which are on the site. If anyone can add any further names, please get in touch.
