PECKETT, Pte John MM 1433647

Citation still withheld by HM Government because of its supposedly politically sensitive nature: MM awarded for actions in Greece on the night of 13th-14th December 1944. From the Battalion History, page 54: '.....Private J Peckett was later awarded a Military Medal for his gallantry in containing the enemy throughout the night from his position on a road block. In the early hours of the morning this same man volunteered to go through a street which was swept by enemy machine-gun fire in order to get further supplies of ammunition for the besieged defenders.'

CHILVERS, WS Sgt Henry 4459297 MM
'Sergeant Chilvers has been a Sergeant in the Carrier Platoon of the 16th Bn The Durham Light Infantry since the 3rd July 1944. He has carried out his duties at all times with distinction. 'His conduct in contact with the enemy has been an inspiration to his comrades. He commanded a Section of Carriers in the action on SERRA RIDGE, which worked round the back of a German position and succeeded in capturing a German 88 mm gun, which was holding up our tanks.
'Sergeant Chilvers has since then led his command on many occasions with great dash and determination. His own will to get at the enemy being passed on to those under his command. I strongly recommend him for a periodic Military Medal.' Recommended by Lieut Col DHC Worrall MC, Commanding 16th Bn The Durham Light Infantry. Date Recommendation

DOUGLAS, Pte Robert 4466422 MM
'Private Douglas has been a motor transport driver in the 16th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry since September 1942. He has taken part in all the actions in which the Battalion has fought since the landings at SALERNO on 9th September 1943, as a Jeep driver.
'In September 1944, when the Battalion was engaged in fighting on Gimmano [sic] Pte Douglas was driving the stretcher jeep and was responsible for evacuating many casualties under heavy shell fire. During this period his jeep was destroyed by shellfire whilst he was beside it. Private Douglas obtained another jeep and continued to evacuate casualties. 'Private Douglas's calm manner in action has been an inspiration to his comrades. His devotion to duty in bringing up rations and ammunition and evacuating casualties under difficult conditions has contributed largely to the success of his Company in action.I strongly recommend him for a periodic award of a Military Medal.' Recommended by Lieut Col DHC Worrall MC, Commanding 16th Bn The Durham Light Infantry. Date Recommendation received: Bde: 24 May 1945.

THOMASSON, WS Regimental Sgt Major 4449248 MBE
'Regimental Sergeant Major Thomasson of the 16th Bn The Durham Light Infantry has held his present rank since 16th September 1942. During the period 1st April to 2nd May 1944 [sic], as before, he has set a splendid example at all times to all ranks of the Battalion. He carried out the duties of Regimental Sergeant Major during the NORTH AFRICAN and ITALIAN campaigns and has fostered a fine Regimental Spirit and helped to band together reinforcements who have been drawn from many regiments. In action his cool and calm manner when carrying out his duties is an inspiration. He has never failed to get up ammunition when required at times under most trying conditions.
'Out of the line, he is quick in doing all he can to ensure a correct standard of turn out, saluting and discipline generally. In my opinion Regimental Sergeant Major Thomasson has done much to ensure the success of the Battalion in action. I strongly recommend that he be granted the award of Member of the Order of the British Empire. Recommended by Lieut Col DHC Worrall MC, Commanding 16th Bn The Durham Light Infantry.
